Religious Education News

I love the liturgical commentaries of Father Richard Leonard and I have again called upon his wisdom in my reflection for this fortnight’s newsletter.

This Sunday 22nd November marks the last Sunday of the liturgical year.  The new Church year begins with the first Sunday of Advent.

This Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King.  Fr Richard places this in its historical context as emanating from the decision by Roman Emperor Constantine to convert to Christianity in 313, thereby changing the landscape forever.  No more religious persecution of Christians, Christianity was meant to unify the Empire, Bishops donned the purple robes of the Roman Senators and churches began to resemble Roman Basilicas.  Previous to this, the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd was the most popular image however, after 313 the image of Jesus in religious art began to take on a more kingly flavour- robes, sceptre and a crown.  Herein some problems arise! Jesus very emphatically stated that his kingdom was not here on earth and that his people would be judged by their generosity and care for the sick.

“That’s why Sunday’s feast is so important. On the last day of the Church’s year we are challenged by Christ our King to give our true allegiance to what really matters. Not ambition, greed, status and power, but the quiet revolutionary work of making the world a more just and peaceful place for everyone to live. “( Father Richard Leonard)

I cannot thank our community enough for their very generous support of our social justice efforts, in supporting Catholic Missions and helping the local St Vincent De Paul chapter with their Xmas appeal.  Let’s all bring in the festive season with a focus on bringing true peace and harmony in our own circles of influence and hope that this resonates outward.

God Bless
